About the Green Grand Prix

The mission of the Green Grand Prix is to promote environmentally friendly road vehicles
through educational and competitive events. Our unique annual celebration has evolved over
the years to provide Auto-Tech students an entertaining day with the goal of inspiring them to
pursue careers in the Northeast specializing in advanced-vehicle technologies.
The Green Grand Prix schedule includes a two hour Fuel Economy Time-Speed-Distance
Road Rally on the WGI circuit, an Autocross, and a Seminar on emerging vehicle technologies.
Our competitive events are organized, sanctioned, and conducted by the Sports Car Club of
America. SCCA volunteers from the Glen Region. Several other SCCA regions participate.
The Primary Sponsors of our event are the UPSTATE TOYOTA DEALERS ASSOCIATION, the
DORIS BOVEE MEMORIAL FOUNDATION, and WILLIAMS AUTO GROUP. Watkins Glen
International graciously donates its entire facility for what has become the Toyota Green Grand
Prix.
The Green Grand Prix has evolved since 2004 , when it was simply a static display of 5
vehicles on the Watkins Glen Courthouse lawn during the Indy Car Festival. It then grew into an
85 mile unsanctioned road rally starting from the Glen Motor Inn and proceeding around the
perimeter of Seneca Lake. The SCCA and IMRRC then became involved, sanctioning,
overseeing, and providing much needed expertise, making it a Time-Speed-Distance event.
The next step was changing the center of operations to the IMRRC, conducting the rally on
county roads, and adding a seminar and various displays in the Watkins Glen Elementary
School parking lot. Watkins Glen International then invited the Green Grand Prix to use its
facility at no charge in 2012. Since then, the event has been refined to serve Auto-Tech
students throughout the Northeast. It remains the only event of its kind in the World. Perhaps
this is a result of the unique character of the Watkins Glen area, its organizations, and generous
population.
